Project-Paryavaran Chetna

On the seventeenth of January 2011, the eco club of our school, Vasundhra organized a programme for the underprivileged girls and ladies of  the nearby colony.

tThis event organized by Vasundhara Club of our School, marked its beginning by a beautiful song-Prakriti Vandana-inspiring the students to protect the environment from the world of pollution. It was really a melodious performance by our school’s music group. This inspiring song provoking responsibility amongst us towards environment was accompanied by a mesmerizing dance by our school mate on a very beautiful song-satyam shivam sundaram by Poorva of class VIII.

Our club has always given its full-fledged support towards all the activities serving our mother nature. A brief view of such activities was presented to the students which includes rally, competitions, and banners taken up by our club in Nav Chetna School throughout the year in which Nav Chetna students had participated.

a) Then a short play “कूड़ा आये कहा से ... कूड़ा जाये कहा रे”

It was enacted by the students of class 7. ".The students were successful in showing all the major carelessness of us resulting in huge tons of wastes being dumped every single day! It was very interesting to know that the main theme of bringing about a change around you is to be the change. Do you know that Delhi produces 7,000 tons of waste every day? Well I didn’t know that and now by knowing this, I can feel the need of working hard towards the issue sincerely by not preserving the articles and disposing it but by using it judiciously and disposing them carefully. Various measures that can be taken are using recycled materials, using bio-degradable wastes as manure etc which can in-turn help us preventing many diseases such as asthama, skin allergies etc. caused due to such carelessness. It was very informative and it made us aware about waste segregation and disposal. It gave information on plastics, wastes, their effects etc. along with slogans like ‘Use jute bags’ ‘reuse, reduce, recycle’ etc.

A short seminar over the hot topic today nothing other than AIDS.Health is important. Yes, it is. The program included various headings, we have already heard of, but do not understand the significance which is immense. Do you know how is it spread..?? Through common practices such as through blood transfer as in case of blood donation and using same syringes. Chances of spreading are 100%.do you know how long this virus called HIV virus can sustain outside the human body? Not more than 20 seconds. Do you know how many people are suffering this disease in our country? Well! These questions were successfully answered by the people who presented this seminar.

NAS Foundation, an organization, had come to our school to spread awareness about AIDS to the Nav Chetna students and the illiterate ladies. They explained the various methods by which it can spread in simple Hindi but the explanation was lucid, easily understandable and filled with many real life examples. Ms. Manjri, one of the two who were explaining clearly explained the various stages of the disease from the window period all the way to AIDS. The 4 ways she explained, in which the HIV virus can spread were blood transfusion, through syringes, parent to child esp. during pregnancy and unprotected sex. The various methods of prevention were also told.

Mrs. Dutta Principal of the school appealed to the people of living in to make the city green and clean. She also stressed Say ‘No’ to Plastic Bags – adopt alternatives like Jute, Cloth & Recycled paper bags.

Then to end the function, our headmistress, Mrs. Kaul interacted with the students, blessed them, and finally culminated the event.

It was really an informative one and we came to know about various things related to water pollution, waste disposal, AIDS etc. We hope more programs like this are conducted in the future.

Environment at KHMS is more than an issue, it is a passion. The school is ISO EMS 14001:2004 certified school. The EMS system is the part of the overall management system that includes KHMS structure, activities, responsibilities, procedure, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving and maintaining the environmental policy.
Through this system we identify the Environmental aspects and work towards sustainable development, preservation and conservation of natural resources like water, canteen, toilets transport, waste management, Laboratories etc.
We have the Environment Protection Brigade- the members of “Vasundhara” – the paperless environment club of KHMS.
It gives me immense pleasure saying that my school, our school, Kulachi Hansraj Model School, is one of the lead Eco school of Delhi as selected by Department of Environment, NCT Delhi. The school makes the following efforts to develop and sustain healthy environment.
1) Our eco-club Vasundhara is a paperless club.
2) We make minimal use or no use of anything dealing with plastics.
3) We conserve water to the maximum we can.
4) Microanalysis kit in chemistry lab to minimize the use of chemicals.
5) Conducting various awareness programmes for students and teachers.
A successful TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR ATTACHED SCHOOLS was organized by our school for giving them an idea for why is our school typically environment friendly and how they can inculcate such measures in their school.
1 Lighting of Lamp- The programme began by lighting the lamp of knowledge by the esteemed Principal of the school Mrs. P. Datta, Headmistress and the invited teachers of attached school.

2. Invocation to God- Lighting of lamp was followed by invocation to God ‘Prakrati Vandan

a’ its theme was ‘Love Nature, Respect Nature’.

3. Introduction of Eco Club of the school-

Headmistress Mrs Kaul, introduced ‘Vasundhara’ the Eco Club of our school, giving Details of the measures and activities undertaken by the students and staff of our school which help in building a future in which humans can live in harmony with nature. She pointed out that it is the children who are the true builders of a better tomorrow and by making a conscious effort to train them and inculcate in them the correct values, we can ensure that our future is in right hands.

4. Address by the Principal – The Principal of our school Mrs. P. Datta. She stressed the need for green school initiatives. She pointed out the concept of green school not only improves the health and energy efficiency of the school facility but also expand the recreational choice and opportunity for all the students. She reflected on the role of Vedic values and rituals in providing an eco friendly environment towards which our school is committed. She gave her blessing and best wishes to all participants for their eco-friendly & endeavours.

5. An annual report of the previous year activities of Vasundhara Club was presented by the President of the club by Abhineet Jain through a Power Point Presentation.

6. Presentation on Earthquake: Power Point
Presentation was given by Taksh student of Class XI F on the measures taken to mitigate the effect of disaster such as earthquake and to prepare the school and the students to combat natural calamities. PPT included reasoning, response, evacuation plan, rescue operation and evaluation of the measures taken by the school.

7. FIRST AID Measures- A detailed presentation of the need and various aspects of First Aid were given by the students of Class VIII followed by a live demonstration of some First-Aid Measures such as CPR, bandaging in case of fracture helping a person injured by an electric shock or in a road accident etc.

8. Poetry Recitation – Vishnupriya student of Class IX recited a self composed poem on global warming.
9. Street Play – Jal Hai to Kal Hai- Nukkad Natak based on conservation of water performed by the students of Eco-Club.

SITE TOUR- The invited teachers were then taken to a tour to the various sites show casing eco-friendly activities under taken by our school such as Roli-Poli to decompose the plant waste produced by the Home Science lab or by the canteen. Herbal Garden has been developed and is maintained by the students. Rain Water harvesting unit with four recharge structures ensures that rain water is harvested and used to raise the levels of ground water. Chemistry lab where micro analysis kit have been installed. This is to reduce wastage due to chemicals. Moreover the chemical effluents are collected, denatured and then put down into the drains. RO Plant and exhaust fans runs on wind energy, Solar Water heating Unit which supplies hot water to Home Sc. Lab and Staff rooms. Solar lights in the Yagyashala. Vermi compost unit allows us to recycle the biodegradable waste from the canteen and home science labs.

10. Mr Vikas Saini A National Youth Awardee from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India. He is General Secretary Delhi National Youth Awardee Association. He is also a President of North Delhi Youth Club registered with Delhi Govt. He gave a lecture on various fire safety measures and the types of fire extinguisher to be used in different situation. He also gave a list of various helpline numbers. This was followed by a live demonstration of fire fighting activity.

The programme concluded by distribution of saplings to all the participating teachers which were to be planted in their respective school as a mark of growing respect of our mother nature.
Our school is determined to bring about a positive change in our environment by changing the mind sets of the students and prepare them to become ‘eco soldiers’ in their future lives.

Asola Wildlife Sanctuary is considered the breathing lung of the cosmopolitan city of New Delhi. It was established in 1992 with the aim to protect the wildlife in the area between Delhi and Surajkund (Delhi-Haryana border).

55 Students and two teachers of our school Ms Manjula Agarwal and Ms preeti Goel visited As olla wild life sanctuary on 20th November, 2010. We went by school bus. Dr. Ahmad and his colleagues welcomed us. Dr Ahmad interacted with the students about the food chain, ecosystem, role of plants and animals with the students. After that students were divided into two groups. The name of first group was kept Lion and for other group Finches.

He also instructed how can you help to conserve abwls? Some precautions were also given like not to take any eatables, no noise, water bottle can be taken, note down about the animal and plants.Both groups were guided by two different persons and went for nature trail separately. This took One and a half hour where students saw Plants like Neem, Peepal, kattha, Keeker, Desi babul, grasses like Sachcharum spotanum, spider flower jungle Ber, etc. Animals seen were Praying Mantis, Butterflies spiders, Termites, Grasshoppers 2 species of Birds like Greyy Francolin, parrots, Blackbuck and Neelgai. He also told about the uses of Amaltas plant Leaves are used as Anta acid. Fruit of this flower is known as Drumsticks which are used as vegetables. The nutrient value of 12 gms of it is equal to 4 bananas/4oranges. Lantana camera flowers wee shown to us. Fruit of which is used in making medicine.

He told about Blubull Largest antelope of India. Males have permanent horn. Females have deciduous horns. Wood peckers are Dr. of jungle. Harpoon is present on their beaks. He also talked about Vultures. They help in cleaning of dead animals.
Termites mound was shown to us. A termite is a social animal. They have three types of members. King which lay eggs. One Queen survives for six years. She lays eggs only and control maintain mound. Rest of the family members are workers which are busy in collecting food, cleaning of mound, and caring of queen.
Acacia roung leucopolia is a native plant of Asolla. Leaves are used as fodder. Bark is used as tannin Latex is used as gondh. The sanctuary also now has two large enclosures for their very successful Blackbuck and Chital or Spotted Deer conservation, rehabilitation and breeding. We also obviously visited the blackbuck and spotted deer enclosures.
Pond eco system is also their. It has Hydrilla plant, Lemma (the smallest plant),Eicchornia, Snails etc.

Ms Preeti Goel-The surprise to find a wild life sanctuary in Delhi was overcome by the pleasure during the trip to Asolla. .It was well maintained. The person in charge Dr. Ahmad Indian forest Officer was very enthusiastic and explained every thing in detail. For the first time I heard a good remark about Termites. There nature friendly behavior was awesome. The use of medicinal plants in various ailments was also explained in detail. We saw many birds and animals like blackbuck and Neel Gai in the wild life sanctuary. It was successful, enjoyable and very educational trip.

Parth Arora IX-C: Our Trip was a mind sharpening and mind mining trip. We saw many tremendous species of butterflies and birds that we often see in our daily life. Here we gained knowledge about different kinds of trees, herbs, shrubs, grasses and also the termites. Unfortunately we were unable to see those massive wild life of sanctuary but Black Buck became Man Of The Match. At the end of our educational trip we saw a video clip shown by them “VANISHING VULTURES”. It was really an adventurous and educational trip by our club.

Our visit to Asolla Bhatti wild life sanctuary was very educational and enjoyable. When we reached their, we were warmly welcomed by the Forest Officer, Dr, Ahmad. Then we were divided into two groups. Our group was named as Tiger. During our nature’s trail we saw different species of plants which we had not seen ever before although we were not able to see many animals but we were successful in watching blackbuck, the second fastest animal. We saw termites and also the excreta waste of Neelgai. After our one and half hour nature’s walk we saw the movie which was on vanishing vultures. We really get to know very interesting facts their which would have never been possible any where also. For me it was an unforgettable nature’s walk.

Diwali-Festival of lights

Diwali is the festival of lights, not noise, and therefore firecrackers should not be a part of celebrations.Crackers are very costly and splurging money on them is sheer waste. -Maximum number of burn cases, fire incidences is being reported in the Diwali season due to the firecrackers. Firecrackers are made up of paper which comes from cutting of trees. So, avoid crackers, save trees. - As child labour is involved in fireworks industry, you are encouraging this social menace by buying crackers.

Harmful effects of firecrackers

1) Health hazards: Burns, deafness, Nausea and mental impairment. Many people die in explosions in factories manufacturing fire-crackers.

Firecrackers can cause hearing loss, high blood pressure, sleeping disturbances and sudden exposure to loud noise can cause temporary or permanent deafness or even result in heart attack.

2) Sometimes, rocket-crackers set fire to huts, heap of dry grass etc. this happen mostly to country side

3) Noise pollution: firecrackers make noise more than the allowed decibel limit for human being.

4) Smog caused by firecrackers may be harmful to inhal

e can cause difficulty for rivers because of reduced visibility.

5) It increases the Pollution in environment.

6)The effluent, colourful and deafening crackers come out of the tiny hands of over one and half lakh children compelled to toil day and night in suffocating worksheds, anticipating death or mutilation due to the explosive nature of the material they handle.

In our school Vasuendhara the eco club launched Cracker free Diwali campaign.

Enlightened by our message of environment protection, Class VII and VIII students have vowed for firecracker-less Diwali this year.

Awareness campaign in the form of lectures through power point presentation has been conducted by us in schools for class! X and X.

Also, we have distributed pamphlets in nearby areas of our school spreading the words about benefits of celebrating Diwali without firecracker. These pamphlets were designed by students of our eco club. Pamphlets were placed on different bulletin boards to sensitize the children of senior classes.

All these measures have created an atmosphere for awakening children and their families about ill-effects of firecrackers.

REPORT OF INDUCTION CEREMONY 2010-2011

In order to inculcate love for the mother earth and to educate the ways and means to preserve the nature, our school has taken up stupendous task of preserving our environment. To achieve this purpose an eco club was established 8 years ago. Since the time of its establishment we have put sincere efforts to create awareness amongst the children about various environmental issues. Our school is committed to provide an ecofriendly environment for imparting educational services, while living the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystem.

Celebrated its induction ceremony on 30/08/10. Chief Guest were Shri Dharmendra ji The secretary Department of NCT Delhi and Dr. B.C.Sabata Senior Scientific Officer Department of NCT Delhi.The ceremony began with lightening of lamp. .Light is considered as a symbol of auspiciousness, prosperity and abundance in the Hindu religion. Light brings brightness with it and removes the darkness. Light makes it possible to
see things clearly. Following Sloka / Shloka was recited
while lighting the lamp. This prayer is also known ''deepa shlokam''.

First of all, our esteemed guests were welcomed with bamboo plants by our principal madam as a token of respect. Welcome speech was given by Mrs. Kaul Headmistress and EMR our school. Further program was presided by Kaveri, Arushi eco club members and Mrs Manjula Agarwal one of the coordinator of Eco club.
The Lord is the entire creation. He is therefore the true owner. To request,or ask or seek something politely with a feeling of reverence or submissiveness. Members of ecoclub preformed a prayer to please the gods to seek their assistance in the fulfillment of goals either for themselves or for other or for the community in general.

The guests and Principal Madam decorated group leaders and the members with badges. Eco pledge was taken by all members of eco club.

Demands are increasing every year for water while resources are becoming more and more limited. The problem of water waste is severe in countries where people are using the same inefficient methods for irrigation of agricultural land. Water needs are increasing every year and the proven fact is that clean water is not available to 1 out of 5 people on earth.
Since many individuals are unaware (or, sadly, just don't care) that this issue needs attention, it is up to more informed and proactive individuals and companies to take up the slack.

Then, a nukkad natak (street play) (spreading awareness about conservation of water) was performed by the members of eco club.

It addresses issues of wastage of water, aspects future problems, the arrogant and the careless people and how one can save water. It was highly appreciated by our guests. The guests were elated that we knew so much about nature & conservation.
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans. It has been caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, which result from human activity such as the burning of fossil fuel and deforestation.
A poem was recited by Vishnu Priya on Global Warming .

Then Chief Guest was requested to say their words of wisdom, He discussed about the activities taken up by the Department of Environment established sustainable use of resources, conservation measures and to evolve strategies for the mitigation of environmental problems at local regional and global levels. Say no to polythene bags, cleaning of river Yamuna, Safe disposal of e- waste with minimal environmental hazards, free distribution of plant saplings.
Principal Madam was requested to give souvenir as a token of respect. The programme was ended by Shantipath.
